A look inside a typical TFT LCD.
A TFT LCD module looks like a single part, but it is a stack of eight main components. After the LCD cell itself, the films, light guide and backlight are the materials that most affect the image you see, and they are where a display can be tuned for brightness and sunlight readability.
The eight parts of a typical TFT LCD
- Rear chassis: the back frame, usually metal, sometimes plastic.
- Interior film stack: diffusers for uniform light, reflector films and brightness enhancement films.
- Light guide: a patterned plastic plate that spreads light from the backlight across the display.
- Sub-chassis: a plastic frame that holds the films, the LCD cell and often the backlight rail.
- Backlight rail: the LEDs, on a PCB or flexible substrate, that set the display’s brightness.
- LCD cell: two thin glass substrates with a transistor for each pixel, a color filter, two polarizers, liquid crystal and the chip-on-glass driver IC.
- Interconnect flex cable: carries signals and power to the cell and backlight.
- Front chassis: the metal front frame that holds the stack together.
